What's Filling You is Controlling You

What's Filling You is Controlling You

Ken Tram

2 Corinthians; Ephesians 5:18; Galatians 5:16; John 15:5

Why does church leave you full on Sunday and running on empty by Wednesday? Pastor Ken says you’re always being filled by something, whether it’s anxiety, shame, control, rejection, or the endless scroll, and whatever fills you ends up controlling you. Drawing on Ephesians 5:18, Galatians 5:16, and John 15:5, he argues the answer isn’t only trying harder but staying connected to God every day, not one hour a week. It’s for anyone who knows Jesus and still feels hungry.

COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS MESSAGE

What does “what fills you controls you” mean?

It comes from Ephesians 5:18, “Do not get drunk on wine… Instead, be filled with the Spirit.” Pastor Ken’s point is that everyone is under some influence, and being drunk means being under the influence of something, while being filled means being under his. He applies it beyond alcohol to anxiety, shame, control, rejection, and the habit of doom scrolling.

Why do I feel spiritually empty midweek even though I go to church?

Pastor Ken uses an all-you-can-eat buffet: you can leave Sunday full and be hungry again by Wednesday. His claim is that one meal a week can’t sustain a body, and one hour on Sunday can’t sustain your spirit. He also says hunger isn’t a flaw but an invitation, since God made us incomplete and he alone completes us.

Is my struggle a behavior problem or something else?

The message says you don’t have a behavior problem, you have a filling problem. Galatians 5:16 says to walk by the Spirit and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh, and Pastor Ken points to the fruit of the Spirit (love, joy, peace, patience, and the rest) as the evidence that it’s happening. His encouragement is to replace what’s filling you rather than only trying to remove things.

How can I connect with God during the week?

Pastor Ken points to John 15:5, “remain in me,” and James 4:8, “Draw near to God and he will draw near to you.” His practical list is prayer throughout the day, reading Scripture so it shapes you rather than just giving you facts, quiet stillness, and a community that pushes you toward God. He also mentions fasting and journaling as other spiritual disciplines.
