Part 5

Mark 10:35-45; 2 Corinthians
What do you really want out of life: a name people know, a full bank account, a seat near the top? Pastor Ken walks through Mark 10:35-45, where James and John ask Jesus for the places of honor and he answers, “Not so with you.” His argument is that Jesus doesn’t cancel greatness, he redefines it as serving, and that serving isn’t just something we do for the church but how God grows us. It’s for anyone tired of chasing the world’s version of success.
COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS MESSAGE
What does Jesus mean that the greatest must be a servant?
When James and John ask for seats at his right and left, Jesus says the world’s rulers lord it over people, then adds, “Not so with you.” Whoever wants to be great must be a servant, and he points to himself: the Son of Man came “not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Mark 10:43-45).
Is it wrong to want to be great?
Not in this message. Pastor Ken says Jesus never tells us not to pursue greatness; we are called to it, just as God defines it rather than the world. The world’s version can bring applause, money, and followers, he says, yet leave a person empty in private, and it always has an expiration date.
Why does serving help me grow spiritually?
Pastor Ken’s big idea is that serving isn’t only something the church needs from us; it is how God grows us. He argues that faith matures when it moves from knowledge to obedience, and that serving shifts a person from “what am I getting out of it?” to “who can I help carry?”
What does serving look like if it isn’t glamorous?
He describes it as ordinary and behind the scenes: leading a small group, helping in student ministry or the nursery, working on the facility or security teams, opening a door, or simply saying hi. The Greek word he highlights, diakonos, is the root of “deacon,” and he says it was a practical title, not a glamorous one.
What if I’m carrying guilt or shame and don’t feel ready to serve?
Pastor Ken says that for some people the first step isn’t serving but handing their guilt, pain, or anxiety to Jesus, who he says carried our sin and shame on the cross. He closes with an invitation to receive Jesus and says the point of “not to be served, but to serve” is not to shame us but to save us.
