Part 7
Ken Tram
2 Corinthians; 2 Kings 2:1-12; Deuteronomy 6:7; John 15:5-16
Ask almost anyone how they’re doing and the honest answer is “busy.” Pastor Ken asks whether we’ve mistaken busyness, knowledge, and influence for actual fruitfulness. Using Elijah handing his mantle to Elisha in 2 Kings 2 and Jesus’ words about the vine in John 15, he argues that fruit isn’t what you retain but what flows out of you into other people. It’s for anyone who has been busy for a long time and still feels a little empty.
COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS MESSAGE
Is being busy the same as being spiritually fruitful?
Pastor Ken says no. We often answer “how are you?” with “busy” and treat a packed calendar as proof we’re healthy, but he says Jesus never measured maturity by how crowded your calendar is. He warns that you can spend a whole life succeeding at the wrong thing and end up exhausted and empty.
What does it mean that fruit is what you release, not what you retain?
Pastor Ken argues that maturity isn’t gathering more Bible knowledge, sermons, or information; fruitfulness is what flows out of you into others. He points to Deuteronomy 6:7, where God’s commands are to be lived out and impressed on children, and says biblical leadership is measured by what your life passes on.
What does Elisha’s request for a “double portion” mean?
In 2 Kings 2, Elijah asks what he can do for Elisha before he’s taken up, and Elisha asks for a double portion of his spirit. Pastor Ken says Elisha wasn’t after Elijah’s success or his cloak, which was just a tool; he wanted Elijah’s God, the Spirit at work inside him. He adds that Elijah’s greatest miracle was what he passed on to Elisha.
How do I actually bear fruit?
Pastor Ken points to John 15: Jesus is the vine, we are the branches, and apart from him we can do nothing. Jesus chose and appointed us to bear fruit that lasts, which Pastor Ken says looks like living out your faith, pouring into others, and praying for and serving the next generation, treating life as a mission field rather than a waiting room.
