Part 4

2 Corinthians 5:10; Romans 8:1; 1 Corinthians 3:11-15; 1 Corinthians 9:24-25; 2 Timothy 4:7-8
It’s easy to pour energy into things that get noticed, and hard to know whether any of it will matter in the long run. Frankie, an elder at New Hope, talks about two kinds of legacy, the worldly kind and the eternal kind, and uses 2 Corinthians 5:10, 1 Corinthians 3, and 1 Corinthians 9 to explain the judgment seat of Christ. His case is that believers are saved and not condemned, but what we build is still tested, so it’s worth building with what lasts. It’s for anyone who wants their daily choices to count.
COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS MESSAGE
What is the judgment seat of Christ (the bema seat)?
In 2 Corinthians 5:10, Paul writes that we will all appear before the judgment seat of Christ to receive what is due for what we did in the body. Frankie explains that “bema” is a Greek word for a raised platform used for judgments and award ceremonies. He teaches that this judgment comes after salvation is settled and is about the works of people who already trust Jesus.
If there is “no condemnation” in Christ, what is actually being judged?
Frankie ties Romans 8:1 to 1 Corinthians 3, where work built on the foundation of Jesus is tested by fire. Gold, silver, and costly stones survive; wood, hay, and straw burn up. He teaches that believers are still saved, but the loss is the missed opportunities that get burned away and are not carried into eternity.
Will believers really receive crowns in heaven?
Frankie says this is his own view and that Christians can disagree on it. He doesn’t think the crowns mentioned in 1 Corinthians 9 and 2 Timothy 4 are literal objects. He suspects they stand for affirmation from Jesus, like the moment when someone you really respect says they’re proud of you, and the chance to learn how your faithfulness was used.
How do I build an eternal legacy instead of a worldly one?
Frankie suggests two questions to ask of your choices: will my name be remembered or Jesus’s, and what will people think versus what will Jesus think? He points to relationships, serving, and community, and says the race in 1 Corinthians 9 is against our own sinful nature, not other people. His encouragement is that as long as you are alive, there is still time.
