Joshua 2:1-14; Hebrews 11; 1 Corinthians 1:27; Philippians 3:12-14; Deuteronomy 7:9; Psalm 103:17
If you’ve ever felt like your past has already decided who you are, Rahab’s story is for you. Pastor Ken preaches Joshua 2, where a prostitute in the city of Jericho hides two Israelite spies and puts her trust in the God of Israel, and he points out that Hebrews 11 still lists her among the people of faith. His point is that your past doesn’t define your eternity, faith in Jesus does, and that one person’s decision can change a family’s story for generations.
COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS MESSAGE
Why is Rahab, a prostitute, in the Hall of Faith in Hebrews 11?
Rahab hid the Israelite spies and told them she knew the Lord “is God in heaven above and on earth below” (Joshua 2). Pastor Ken notes that Hebrews 11 still calls her “Rahab the prostitute,” and he believes the label was kept to show how powerful God’s grace is. She wasn’t Jewish or raised in faith, yet God’s grace reached her.
Can God really work in someone with a past like mine?
Pastor Ken says yes, and he points to 1 Corinthians 1:27, that God chooses the foolish and the weak to shame the wise and the strong. His line is that grace doesn’t check your resume before it rescues you. If grace could reach a woman in a pagan city like Jericho, he says, it can reach you past your reputation, your labels, and your past.
How do I let go of my past without pretending it didn’t happen?
Pastor Ken acknowledges that life can be unfair and that some people carry hurt they never deserved. But he says a hard life doesn’t excuse a hard heart. Using Paul’s words in Philippians 3, forgetting what is behind and pressing on, he describes the past as an anchor, not a life raft, and says holding on to hate and unforgiveness keeps us from what God has for us.
What does it mean to turn generational sin into generational salvation?
Rahab asked that her whole family be spared (Joshua 2:13). Pastor Ken uses that, along with Deuteronomy 7:9 and Psalm 103:17, to argue that our choices of faith or unbelief shape the people who come after us. He says Rahab’s faith changed her family’s story and notes that she later appears in the line leading to David and to Jesus.
