What Leaks Out When Life Squeezes You? | The Truth About Pressure & Faith

Dave Robinson

Acts 4:1-31; Psalm 118:22; Psalm 2:1-2

When life squeezes you, what actually comes out? Dave starts with a very literal leak at a crowded lunch and uses it to look at Acts 4, where Peter and John are arrested, put on trial, and told to stop talking about Jesus. What came out of them under pressure was what they were already full of: honesty, Scripture, prayer, and boldness. The message argues that all of us leak whatever we’ve been filling ourselves with, and it’s for anyone who isn’t sure how they’d respond when things get hard.

COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS MESSAGE

What does it mean that what leaks out is what goes in?

Dave’s picture is a container that spills what’s inside when it’s squeezed. Peter and John’s ordinary days overflowed with healing and Jesus, and when they were put on trial, the same things came out: honesty, Scripture, and prayer. The point is that pressure doesn’t create your character so much as reveal what you’ve been filling yourself with.

How did Peter go from denying Jesus to speaking boldly?

Dave points to the resurrection of Jesus and the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. Peter denied knowing Jesus three times, yet in Acts 4 he speaks, filled with the Holy Spirit, before the same rulers. The takeaway is that fear doesn’t disqualify you, and that you can choose to fill yourself with something different.

What should I fill my life with so I respond well under pressure?

The message names what came out of the early believers: Scripture, prayer, honestly telling what Jesus has done, and staying in community. Dave says these are available to everyone today, and ends by praying for God’s help to fill ourselves with the things he has called us to.

What did the early church pray when they were threatened?

In Acts 4:23-31, after Peter and John were released with a warning, the believers didn’t ask for protection. They quoted Psalm 2 and asked God to let them speak his word with great boldness. Dave highlights this as what flows out of people full of prayer, praise, and Scripture, and notes that they were all filled with the Holy Spirit afterward.
