Part 4
Rocky
Acts 2:42-47; Genesis 1-3; John 8:31-32
Why do you go to church: the feeling, the snacks, the attention? Guest pastor Rocky starts with how his own kids love church for reasons that have little to do with Jesus, then asks whether adults do the same. Looking at Acts 2:42-47, he argues the church is not a crowd focused on emotion but a people focused on devotion: to truth, to real community without masks, and to reaching people who don’t know Jesus. It’s for anyone tired of church as a performance.
COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS MESSAGE
What was the early church devoted to in Acts 2:42-47?
Acts 2:42 lists the apostles’ teaching, fellowship, breaking bread, and prayer. Rocky draws out three emphases: devotion to truth, to community, and to reaching people. He notes the first church had no budget, building, or promotional strategy, yet reached its community because of what it was devoted to.
What does it mean to be devoted to biblical truth?
Rocky says our emotions shouldn’t decide what’s true; truth should. He warns that the Bible can be made to say anything out of context, as with the “flip and find” method of opening to a random verse. He suggests asking whether a passage is prescriptive (commands for all time) or descriptive (what happened), and points to John 8:31-32.
What does Rocky mean by taking off the mask?
He explains that “hypocrite” originally meant an actor who put on masks on stage, and says many people hide their struggles at church in the same way. When you hide the real you, he argues, people can only love the mask. His alternative is honest community, since everyone is broken and needs a savior, and God knows and loves the real you.
Is church supposed to be about meeting my needs?
Rocky says no. He argues that treating church as something to consume, for emotion, snacks, or attention, leaves us with a small version of Jesus. The early church, he says, was committed to people, not a brand or a building, and he calls believers to take the good news into their community because lives are at stake.
