Part 18
Ken Tram
Acts 15:1-19; Acts 16:3; 1 Corinthians 10:23-24
Have you ever gotten so attached to how church should feel, the songs, the Bible translation, the unwritten rules, that you lost sight of who it’s for? Pastor Ken preaches Acts 15, where the gospel is spreading with joy until certain people insist that new believers must be circumcised to be saved. His argument is that anything added to grace subtracts from the gospel, and that our preferences can quietly turn into checkpoints for people who haven’t met Jesus yet. It’s for longtime churchgoers and for anyone who has felt held at the door.
COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS MESSAGE
What does “anything you add to grace, you subtract from the gospel” mean?
Pastor Ken’s point is that when we say people must also do something, whether a ritual, a denomination, a translation, or good behavior first, we treat Jesus’ “It is finished” as not enough. He ties it to Acts 15:11, where Peter says we are saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, “just as they are.”
Why did the early church argue about circumcision?
Some believers from Judea taught that Gentile converts had to be circumcised and keep the law of Moses to be saved (Acts 15:1, 5). Pastor Ken explains it carried family line, heritage, and covenant identity. The council sided with grace, and James concluded they should not make it difficult for Gentiles turning to God (15:19).
If circumcision wasn’t required, why did Paul circumcise Timothy?
Acts 16:3 says Paul did it because of the Jews in that area. Pastor Ken reads it as a missional choice rather than a requirement for salvation: Timothy, who was half Greek and half Jewish, willingly gave up his comfort so the gospel could be heard. The point is a method for sharing the gospel, not a new rule.
What does it look like to give up my preferences for the gospel?
Pastor Ken points to 1 Corinthians 10:23-24: not everything is beneficial, and no one should seek their own good but the good of others. His examples include favorite songs, a favorite Bible translation, and nostalgia for how church used to feel, and he asks what burdens you’re willing to bear so others can know Jesus.
