Part 22
Ken Tram
Acts 19:11-20; Acts 1:8; Galatians 2:20; Ephesians 1:13-14
Some people seem to have something you can’t quite name, and the question is whether you have it. Pastor Ken opens with that and turns it toward the Holy Spirit living inside every believer. Preaching Acts 19, he sets Paul, through whom God did extraordinary things, next to the seven sons of Sceva, who tried to use Jesus’ name without knowing him and were beaten. His warning is that borrowed faith will always break down. It’s for anyone who has leaned on someone else’s faith, or isn’t sure their own is real.
COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS MESSAGE
What does the “indwelling of the Holy Spirit” mean?
Pastor Ken defines it as the permanent presence of the Holy Spirit in the life of every believer, beginning at the moment of salvation. He says the Spirit isn’t a vacation home visitor who comes and goes. It’s why Scripture calls our bodies a temple, and why Paul can say “Christ lives in me” (Galatians 2:20).
What is “borrowed faith”?
Pastor Ken uses the phrase for faith that depends on someone else, such as a spouse’s devotion, a grandparent’s prayers, a pastor’s relationship with God, or simply being brought to church by a friend. He argues that borrowed faith has no roots and will eventually break down, so each person has to live out their own faith.
What happened to the seven sons of Sceva in Acts 19?
They tried to drive out an evil spirit by saying the name of “Jesus whom Paul preaches.” The spirit answered that it knew Jesus and Paul, but not them, and the man overpowered them. Pastor Ken reads this as showing that saying Jesus’ name without the Spirit living in you carries no authority. The result in Ephesus was fear, honor for Jesus’ name, and many believers confessing and burning their sorcery scrolls.
How do I know I belong to Jesus?
Pastor Ken points to Ephesians 1:13-14: when you believed, you were marked with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, a deposit guaranteeing your inheritance. In his words, that seal, not a membership card or certificate, is the guarantee. He adds that attending church or reading the Bible alone doesn’t mean you have the Spirit; it comes from laying everything down and surrendering to Jesus.
What does the Spirit’s power look like in everyday life?
Pastor Ken says it shows up in ordinary fruit: praying over your kids, choosing forgiveness in a marriage, encouraging a coworker, being a steady neighbor. He also says God still does miracles today, but that the point is a life changed by the Spirit and a heart for people far from God, not just dramatic moments.
