Paul & Silas at Midnight: What Real Faith Looks Like

Paul & Silas at Midnight: What Real Faith Looks Like

Ken Tram

Acts 16:16-34; James 2:19; 2 Corinthians 13:5; Matthew 7:21-23; Revelation 3:16; 1 Corinthians 11:1

You can know all the right things about God and still be far from Him. Pastor Ken preaches Acts 16, where a woman keeps shouting true things about Paul and Silas and Paul drives a spirit out of her, to introduce what he calls “demonic faith,” belief that knows the facts but never surrenders. He then turns to Paul and Silas singing in a Philippian prison at midnight as a picture of surrendered faith. If you’ve ever wondered whether your faith is more than belief, this message asks the question head-on.

COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS MESSAGE

What is “demonic faith” according to James 2:19?

James says even the demons believe there is one God and shudder. Pastor Ken uses that to describe a faith that knows Jesus is Lord and even trembles at His power but never trusts, surrenders, or obeys. His point is that the danger isn’t failing to believe in God, but stopping at belief.

What’s the difference between belief and surrendered faith?

Pastor Ken defines surrendered faith as trusting Jesus as Savior, obeying Him as Lord, and worshiping Him even in the dark. Faith isn’t just information in your head; it’s allegiance with your life. He points to Matthew 7:21-23, where people do religious things yet hear Jesus say, “I never knew you.”

Is this message saying my faith isn’t real?

Pastor Ken says he isn’t trying to make anyone insecure about their salvation. He invites self-examination from 2 Corinthians 13:5, “Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith,” and says he’d rather people wrestle with it now than assume belief is enough. The goal he states is surrender, not a spiritual high.

How could Paul and Silas worship in prison after being beaten?

Acts 16 says they were severely flogged and put in the inner cell with their feet in stocks, yet at midnight they were praying and singing to God. Pastor Ken says they had every reason for anger but chose worship, and that freedom comes from a surrendered heart, not unlocked doors. The jailer then asked what he must do to be saved.
