The #1 Reason You’re Burnt Out (And How God Designed Rest for You!)

Frankie

Exodus 20:8-11; Matthew 12:8-13; Genesis 2:2-3; Mark 2:27-28

Burnout rarely announces itself. It looks like working nights and weekends just to stay afloat, and a prayer that sounds like “God, please take something off my plate.” Frankie, one of the elders at New Hope, shares how a crushing season at work led him to teach on the Sabbath. Using Exodus 20, Matthew 12, Genesis 2 and Mark 2, he argues that rest is a spiritual discipline God built into creation, not just a day off. It’s for anyone who is running on empty and wondering if rest is allowed.

COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS MESSAGE

Is the Sabbath just a day off work?

No. Frankie defines the Sabbath as a time to cease from labor and dedicate yourself to God in spiritual matters. He compares it to fasting, which isn’t simply the absence of eating but replacing something with a focus on God. Watching sports all day, he says, isn’t the same as observing the Sabbath.

Does the Sabbath have to be on Saturday or Sunday?

Frankie calls it a heart issue and says not everyone can rest on a weekend. When he worked weekends, he took his Sabbath on a Thursday, but he still had to be intentional about it. He warns against getting legalistic and points to Jesus in Mark 2:27: “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.”

If Jesus summed up the law as loving God and neighbor, do the Ten Commandments still matter?

Frankie says he used to think they didn’t, but he now argues that Jesus summarized the Ten Commandments rather than replacing them. The first four are about loving God, and “remember the Sabbath day” is one of them. So he says keeping the Sabbath is essential to loving God with all your heart.

Why does God want me to rest?

Frankie says God designed us to need rest because he designed us to depend on him. He points to creation, from dolphins that sleep with half their brain at a time to farmland that has to be rotated, and reasons that if animals and soil can be overworked, so can we. Rest, he says, is where we get recharged for the mission God gives us.
