"Lord, Where Else Would We Go?" - The Faith of Peter

"Lord, Where Else Would We Go?" - The Faith of Peter

Ken Tram

John 6:33-40; John 6:66-67; John 6:68-69

What do you do when following Jesus stops fitting your life, when his teaching gets hard and the crowd thins out? Pastor Ken walks through John 6, where many of Jesus’ disciples turned back and Peter answered, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.” His point is that fans want Jesus to fit their life, while followers surrender theirs. It’s for anyone who goes to church and quietly wonders whether they’re following Jesus or just around him.

COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS MESSAGE

What did Peter mean by “Lord, to whom shall we go”?

After Jesus said hard things and many disciples left (John 6:66), he asked the twelve if they wanted to leave too. Peter answered for them: “You have the words of eternal life.” Pastor Ken reads this as Peter admitting that the old way of life is a dead end, and that he would rather trust Jesus than go back, even without understanding everything.

Can you go to church every week and still not be following Jesus?

According to this message, yes. John 6:66 says it was his disciples who turned back, people who had listened to his teaching and watched his miracles. Pastor Ken says you can attend, know the Bible, and even lead a small group while still wanting Jesus to fit your schedule and comfort. The question he asks is whether you are following Jesus or just around him.

Do I need to understand everything about God to have faith?

No. Pastor Ken says faith isn’t understanding every teaching, it’s trusting the person of Jesus when you don’t understand, or when life isn’t going your way. He compares it to using a microwave without knowing the physics: you trust the one who designed it. He adds that knowing facts about God isn’t the same as trusting him.

Why didn’t Jesus chase after the disciples who walked away?

Pastor Ken points to the three stories in Luke 15. The lost sheep and lost coin were lost without meaning to be, so they get pursued. The prodigal son chose to leave, and his father waited. He says those who left in John 6 looked more like the son, and that Jesus invites but doesn’t force, because forced love isn’t love.
