Luke 22:7-15; Psalm 23:5
If you’ve blown it, pulled away from God, or run for years, do you still get a seat at the table? Pastor Ken looks at the Last Supper in Luke 22:7-15, where Jesus eagerly prepares a Passover meal knowing one friend will betray him and the others will scatter. His point is that Jesus’ invitation doesn’t depend on how well you’ve done, and the fitting response to that kind of love is trust and a decision to follow him. It’s for anyone who feels too far gone to be welcome.
COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS MESSAGE
Can God still love me after I’ve failed him?
Pastor Ken says nothing you have done, or ever will do, can outpace God’s love. At the Passover table Jesus reclined with all twelve disciples, including Judas, who had already agreed to betray him, and said, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you” (Luke 22:15). Pastor Ken calls that mercy and grace: love given when it isn’t deserved.
What does it mean that Jesus “reclined” at the table?
Pastor Ken says reclining (Luke 22:14) was a posture of peace, rest, and relationship, something you did with people you trusted, which is different from the formal, seated picture in famous paintings. Jesus did it with disciples who would abandon him within a day. He takes it as a sign of how close Jesus drew to the very people who would fail him.
What should I do when God’s instructions don’t make sense?
In Luke 22:10-13, Jesus tells the disciples only to follow a man carrying a jar of water, and they find everything just as he said. Pastor Ken says God’s instructions don’t always come with explanations but always come with purpose. You don’t need the whole map, he says, only a first step of trust, like making a hard call to forgive someone.
Why was there no lamb on the table at the Last Supper?
Pastor Ken notes that a Passover meal required a lamb, which recalls God’s deliverance of Israel from slavery in Egypt, yet the Gospels never mention one on the table. He says that’s because the Lamb was at the table: Jesus himself, the ultimate sacrifice and demonstration of love.
How do I respond to Jesus’ invitation?
Pastor Ken says communion calls us to remember, but this message calls us to respond. The sermon closes with a prayer, led aloud, asking Jesus into your heart and thanking him for forgiving sins. Pastor Ken says it isn’t a magic formula and the words don’t have to be exact. It’s a commitment to trust Jesus and follow him.
