Luke 15:11-32; James 4:1
Ever looked at the mess you’re in and wondered how a handful of small choices got you here? Pastor Ken walks through the Parable of the Prodigal Son in Luke 15, tracing how the younger son drifted into a pigpen and what finally woke him up. Then the story turns to a father who runs, and to an older brother left standing outside the party. The message asks the church to stop waiting on the porch and join God’s search for people who are lost. It’s for anyone who feels far from God, and for anyone who’s been around church a long time.
COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS MESSAGE
How does someone end up in a mess they never planned for?
Pastor Ken calls it “the drift.” The younger son didn’t set out to land in a pigpen, and most of us don’t set out to wreck anything either. The message says sin doesn’t advertise consequences, it whispers conveniences, and the small thing you tolerate today can quietly lead somewhere destructive. He ties this to James 4:1 and to the idea that sin is loving good things in the wrong order.
What does it mean for the younger son to “come to his senses”?
Pastor Ken points to three things the son had to see: he was made for something more than the pigpen, the world can’t deliver what it promises, and he couldn’t save himself. That last one is the turning point of the message. Realizing you need a Savior is what sends him back toward home, and for us it points to Jesus.
Why does the father run to his son in Luke 15?
In the message, the father’s sprint is a picture of how much God loves lost people. A grown man hiking up his robes to run was undignified, and the father does it anyway because his son is home. Pastor Ken connects this to Christmas: God coming in the flesh toward sinners, not waiting for us to climb up to him.
What is the older brother’s part in the story, and what does it mean for me?
Pastor Ken notes that in that culture a father wouldn’t go out searching, so the search would fall to the older son. Jesus ends the story with that brother outside the party and the question left hanging. The message applies it to believers: you were saved by love so you can join the search, starting with one person in your life you could invite to church.
