When Church People Miss God

When Church People Miss God

Ken Tram

Luke 10:30-37; Luke 19:10; 1 Corinthians 9:22

Most of us learned the Good Samaritan as a story about being a nice person, so why did Jesus tell it to a religious man asking how to inherit eternal life? Pastor Ken argues in Luke 10 that the familiar label doesn’t match what’s inside. The priest and the Levite show what happens when God’s people turn inward, and the outsider who stops shows God’s own heart for the broken. The message challenges church people to look up from their own comfort and join God’s mission, and it speaks gently to anyone who feels left on the side of the road.

COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS MESSAGE

Is the parable of the Good Samaritan just about being a good person?

Pastor Ken says that’s the wrong takeaway. Jesus told it in answer to a religious man asking what he must do to inherit eternal life, and the message argues that “just be a good person” would make Jesus unnecessary. In his reading, the story confronts religious people who had a calling to bless others and walked past instead.

Why did the priest and the Levite walk past the injured man?

In the message, the priest and Levite stand for Israel, a people called to represent God, reveal him, and prepare the way for the Savior. Pastor Ken says they turned a calling to bless the world into a sense of being chosen above it. He warns that our love drifts inward by default, and that we can get good at loving God “in theory” while overlooking people in reality.

What if I’m the one who feels beaten up on the side of the road?

Pastor Ken speaks directly to people who show up smiling while quietly exhausted or let down by people they trusted. He says you’re not invisible, forgotten, or disqualified, and that people failing you doesn’t mean God has failed you. He sees Jesus in the Samaritan, who stops, cares for the wounded, and promises to return.

What does it look like for a church to “seek and save the lost”?

The message cites Luke 19:10 and Paul’s “all things to all people” in 1 Corinthians 9:22, then gets practical. Pastor Ken says serving in places like first-time guest welcome, follow-up, and kids ministry is mission, not a side gig. His summary of the purpose of the church is pointing people to Jesus: “These things we do that others may live.”
