Matthew 2:1-12; 1 Timothy 6:10; Matthew 6:24
Nobody walks into church hoping to hear about money, and it’s fair to wonder why a pastor would bring it up. Pastor Ken starts in Matthew 2, where the Magi follow a star to worship a child while Herod, hearing the same news, grabs for control. His case is that generosity is an overflow of worship, and that money is never neutral because it will either master us or become a tool for honoring God. It’s for anyone who flinches when church talks about giving and wants to hear the reasoning first.
COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS MESSAGE
Why does a pastor talk about money in church?
Pastor Ken says he’d rather talk about 150 other subjects, but he sees his job as feeding and protecting the flock, and he argues that money is spiritual. People are made to worship, and he teaches that money by default pulls our worship toward itself. That’s why he thinks silence on the topic wouldn’t protect anyone.
What does “follow the star, not the stats” mean?
In Matthew 2, Herod and the Magi hear the same news and respond differently. Pastor Ken says Herod looked at the situation and reached for control, while the Magi kept their eyes on the star and set out to worship. The application is to trust God’s provision instead of letting bank balances, the economy, or the need to control decide what we do.
Can you really serve both God and money?
Pastor Ken points to Jesus’ words in Matthew 6:24 that no one can serve two masters, and to 1 Timothy 6:10 on the love of money. He ties it to Israel’s golden calf: they didn’t stop worshiping, they redirected it. His takeaway is that money is either a master or a means, and worship reassigns it as a tool.
How do I give without feeling guilted into it?
Pastor Ken says he’s not trying to guilt anyone and even says that if you aren’t overjoyed in giving, don’t give. His starting point is remembering what God has already done, because he says we suffer from spiritual amnesia and forget how desperate we once were. Generosity, in his view, should flow from worship and gratitude rather than pressure.
