WHY IS BAPTISM IMPORTANT?

Jesus Himself was baptized! 

While we do not believe that baptism is a requirement for salvation we do see that Jesus often led be action, giving his followers a visual representation of things He called them too. Baptism is no different! Matthew 3:13-17 says "Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John.  But John tried to deter him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” Jesus replied, “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.” Then John consented.

As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”

 

Jesus Called Believers to be Baptized! 

Before Jesus ascended to the Father, he gave to his disciples the last instructions (known today as the Great Commission):

And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:18-20).

Jesus’ last instructions to his disciples highlight the importance of baptism for believers and the church. The disciples obeyed Jesus and made disciples of Him. And they baptized the new believers as Jesus had commanded them.

Baptism is also a great way for you to take another step in your faith journey. Baptism is a public declaration to the church body, it is you saying, "I know and trust in Jesus as my Savior!" This action requires boldness on your part and it allows the church family to come alongside of you and celebrate well!
